Kayla Plater
1ST hr.
Bullets, Headlines, Highlights

Some old friends and some new friends. My friends aren’t really “new” and “old” just some of my friends I have had longer, like my friends Jackie, Hanna, Amanda, Jake and Blake. Some of my friends that I have recently became friends with are Peter and Matt, but over all there all my friends.

Some SHS activities that I have attended are the freshmen, JV and varsity football games and Invisible Children. After I attended Invisible Children I went to night on the field which went along with it, I liked all the activities and I hope I attend many more to come.

One of my scariest moments was on the first day of school when I was sure I was going to get lost and not make it to my classes. I was so nervous, I had no idea what to do but it was funny because I didn’t get lost and I made it to all of my classes, I was so worried for nothing.

I wouldn’t really say that I have a hardest class, but the tests for Mrs. Bergeski and Mrs. Sebok really stump me. I do have and easiest class, it would be art fundamentals with Mr. McMillan, it is also one of my more fun classes because we just get to color and paint all hour.

Some of the faces that have been seen in the news lately are Barack Obama because he is the president and he also won the Nobel Peace Prize, also Hillary Clinton, we have been seeing a lot of her face lately because she is the secretary of state and she is meeting with Russia’s president.

Some interesting new words that I like to use are conniption and aloof. I learned the word aloof in Mrs. Van Horn’s class, it was one of our vocabulary words, I just liked the way it sounded and conniption which means a hysterical fit, I also like how it sounds and I think it sounds much better then stop having a fit.

My first cultural event was going to Invisible Children at Stevenson in the auditorium, I watched a video and listen to some speakers then talk about what we just watched. What I watched was a video made by college students who went to Uganda in Africa and found the horrible sight of child soldiers and many people being mistreated.

October 24 is the day of Stevenson’s homecoming this year, I am very excited about my first homecoming. Everyone always says how fun they are so I am looking forward to it. I am just going with a few friends, but it should still be really fun.

I don’t really have that much advice for new incoming freshmen, but I will say that you shouldn’t get so nervous and everyone says high school is really hard. Another thing is the school seems confusing at first but it’s not hard to navigate your way through it all, you should just have fun throughout the years.

What I’m looking forward to is getting to go to all the fun events in the future, like the football games and more homecomings. I’m also looking forward to meeting new people because it’s just fun to get to know more people.

Some achievements I have made are making it to high school every day so far and getting to all of my classes. I was so worried that I would get lost and thought that high school was so much different, it’s different than middle school a little bit but it’s not a huge, drastic difference. I am happy that I am doing well in high school so far.

I would have to say the top five current events right now would be that Iran is failing to approve the UN nuclear deal, the suicide bomber who killed eight people outside of the Pakistan military complex, Obama winning the Nobel Peace Prize. Hillary Clinton meeting with Russia’s president and the H1N1 shot is finally available to the United States.

A really popular song in 2009 was “circus” by Britney Spears. I think it was so popular because for a while Britney was in the news but all for bad things she had done wrong, so it was like her comeback. Almost on every radio station that you would turn it to you would hear the song “circus”. I am glad the she came back with such a good and popular song.

For the most popular movie I would say the movie “Twilight” because for so long kids had read the series of “Twilight” and then they finally came out with a movie. I saw the movie and I thought it was a wonderful movie, but many of the people who read the book said the book was much better.

Fads and trends of 2009 were some skinny jeans like from in the 80’s when everyone always wore skinny jeans, I think the older styles are starting to come back, and personally I like most of the styles that are showing up.

I have heard a lot of gossip and rumors about how the world is going to end in 2012, some people really do believe that that is when the world is going to end just because that’s when the myan calendar ends, but I personally don’t believe that just one random day on December 21 the world will just end, I think it’s all just talk.

Culture

Culture, Culture, Culture

Culture in America might be a little different from the culture in China or Antarctica. The average family size in America is 3.19 and 9.8% families are in poverty not even including just the individuals in poverty. There are still many fun and happy things that go on in America like freedom, but there are also a lot of holidays like Easter, it’s a Christian holiday, the meaning behind it is when they believe Jesus rose from the dead. The children die Easter eggs all sorts of colors and then the “Easter Bunny” hides them. On Easter Sunday children wake up and usually go to church, in the morning they go in search for their Easter basket and their colored Easter eggs that he “Easter Bunny” brought while they were asleep. On July 4th many people wear red, white and blue, there are many parties and lots of fireworks celebrating the countries birthday, when we gained our independence. In the fall every October 31st is Halloween American children dress up in any costume they choose and go from door to door around the neighborhoods saying “Trick or Treat” and getting candy in return. There’s also thanksgiving which is when the Native Americans and pioneer settlers came to peace, on thanksgiving Americans usually spend time with their family and eat a large feast. Another Christian holiday is Christmas, Jesus’ birthday, December 25th family’s get a pine tree and put it in their house, the decorate it with ornaments and lights and then when the children wake up they would find presents under the tree from “Santa Claus”. There are many more fun holidays but there are also some holidays in remembrance of some of the horrible things that happened to our country like Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, December 7th, on December 7th 1941 the Japanese surprise attacked the military base in Hawaii killing many people and starting the World War Two. Another horrible time in American history was September 11th, 2001 on this day terrorists hijacked four planes, they destroyed the world trade center, damaged the pentagon and killed more than three thousand people, that day will forever be remembered.

My culture is pretty much an average American family, I live with my mom, dad, brother and sister. We celebrate Halloween, Easter and Christmas and many more, we celebrate our birthdays and we usually have cake and ice cream and get some presents from your family and friends celebrating your life. Some things my family likes to do for fun is going up north to Brimley and Gladwin where our family’s cottages are. We enjoy to spend time with our family and friends and we are very fond of having celebrations and all getting together to celebrate all the holidays. In my family we agree that school is very important and helps you succeed in life so my siblings and I try to take school seriously. Some things that I and other American teenagers do are just be with our friends and do whatever. My culture might be different from some other cultures just as I view other cultures different or weird, but there is no right or wrong way of culture it just makes us all who we are today.
